W1052 ZA-K from 10 Squadron

On 27th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W1052 ZA-K from 10 Squadron took off at 2059 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

The target was attacked at 0115 hrs from 1,000 feet. A smoke screen was obscuring Tirpitz, but the mines were believed to have fallen near the ship. Two of the 1,000 lb mines hung up* and were jettisoned in Trondheimfjord. Intense flak was encountered on the bombing run up the fjord. An aircraft was seen being shot down in flames over the town of Trondheim and three members of the crew seen to bail out.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing at 0555 hrs on 28th April 1942.

*Flight Engineer, Sgt 'Taffy' Manning, recalls the mines that hung up and the system that the Flight Engineers from 10 Squadron then devised to resolve this problem the following night. A strong cord was arranged and attached to all the mine trip levers. In the event of a 'hang up', the Flight Engineer would dash down the aircraft from the cockpit area to the area behind the rear spar and would pull hard on the cords to release the mines.

On the operation that took place on the evening of 28th April 1942, this crew flew in aircraft W1039 ZA-C.

On 28th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W1052 ZA-K from 10 Squadron took off at 2059 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

Tirpitz was attacked at 0105 hrs from 200 feet and was obscured by a smoke screen. The bombing run was made by using the cliff above Tirpitz and the island of Saltøya at the entrance to Fættenfjord. Other than the smoke screen, visibility was very good. Intense and accurate flak was experienced from the batteries on both sides of the fjord and a shell struck the aircraft bursting in the wireless operators compartment severely wounding the 1st wireless operator, F/Sgt Clear, and the second pilot, P/O Dempsey. In addition to this damage, the tail guns had become u/s on the outward flight. In spite of this the pilot, F/sgt Rochford, and the rest of the crew managed to fly the aircraft back to base.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing at 0527 hrs on 29th April 1942, and the two wounded members of the crew were taken to hospital for treatment.
