W1039 ZA-C from 10 Squadron

On 30th March 1942, the crew of Halifax W1039 ZA-C from 10 Squadron took off at 1840 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East Coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

Due to their being 10/10th low cloud which made it impossible to see the fjords and valleys in the Trondheim area the crew were unable to locate the target. Mines were jettisoned at 2311 hrs from 8,000 feet at a position of 63.34 N 06.65 E.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to base landing at RAF Lossiemouth at 0247 hrs on 31st March.

The target was attacked at 0106 hrs from 350ft. The smoke screen being used to cover the target was deployed and two puffs of smoke were seen to come up. Visibility was good and flak was reported to be intense from both sides of the fjord. The aileron controls were shot away and the starboard flap controls damaged but the Captain, F/Lt Hacking, was able to fly the aircraft home.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to base landing at RAF Lossiemouth at 0555 hrs on 28th April 1942.

On 28th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W1039 ZA-C from 10 Squadron took off at 2042 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East Coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

The crew identified and attacked the Tirpitz from 300 feet at 0043 hrs. One mine was seen to burst beneath the stern of Tirpitz. Visibility was excellent with no cloud. The flak from both sides of the fjord was very intense. As the aircraft flew over the target, the leads to the petrol cocks were shot away leading to the inner starboard engine failing. As well as this an 18 inch square hole was blown in the tail plane. The Navigator, Pilot Officer Dickson had a narrow escape when he returned to his postition in the aircraft after releasing the mines to find there was a gaping hole about a foot in diameter below his seat caused by flak. The shrapnel from the hit had been caught up in Pilot Officer Dicksons navigation bag and had torn the maps inside to pieces. On the return flight he had to sit in his position with a howling gale blowing through the gaping hole through which he was able to see the North Sea!

The damage to the fuel supply was causing the Flight Engineer, Sgt 'Taffy' Manning some considerable concern. After the release of the mines he recalls "I went back to assist my Captain, W/O Peterson, to 'feather' the starboard inner engine. We were still quite low in the fjord with guns firing down on us as we used full power to climb to port and do a 180° turn - "prayed" and headed for home. After setting course, I went down to survey the damage. With the petrol supply reduced, I decided we may have to prepare for ditching. However, with prudent engine handling we managed to get into Sumburgh. 'Pete' Peterson was magnificent and was awarded the immediate DFC."

Despite the damage caused to the aircraft in the target area, the pilot, W/O Peterson managed to fly the aircraft back over the North Sea and landed at RAF Sumburgh safely at 0416 hours on 29th April 1942.

The aircraft was too badly damaged to be able to continue flying and the crew were flown to Lossiemouth the following day in another aircraft to join the other members of 10 Squadron who had returned from the Tirpitz operation.
