On 28th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W7660 MP-L from 76 Squadron took off at 2022 hrs from RAF Tain on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

The weather was reported as having been similar to the previous nights operation to the same target with good, almost perfect visibility which allowed the crew to map read easily to the position of the target. The target was obscured by a smoke screen and the crew were unable to positively identify the target, Tirpitz, but bombed in the estimated position. Bursts were observed. Light flak concentrations, searchlights and aerodromes were also attacked with good results after primary target had been bombed.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Tain landing at 0447 hrs on 29th April 1942.
