L7584 KM-S from 44 Squadron
On 27th April 1942, the crew of Lancaster L7584 KM-S from 44 Squadron took off at 2015 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.
Tirpitz was attacked at 0020 hrs from 8,000 feet with one 4,000 lb HC bomb and four 500 lb GP bombs. Bursts were seen by 2nd Pilot and Wireless Operator directly over the target but it was impossible to say if the target was actually hit although it appeared to be very close. All bombs burst in a stick. The first two 500 lb bombs seemed to burst past the ship and the flash of the 4,000 lb bomb was seen after and appeared to be directly over Tirpitz. The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing at 0355 hrs on 28th April1942. |
