L7581 KM-R from 44 Squadron



On 27th April 1942, the crew of Lancaster L7581 KM-R from 44 Squadron took off at 2018 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

This aircraft did not reach the target area. On taking off from Lossiemouth the pilot noticed liquid emitting from the port outer engine. As the engine heated up the liquid became steam and the engine went u/s. Flames were also seen coming from the engine exhaust. All bombs were jettisoned safe.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing at 2053 hrs on 27th April1942.
