L7577 OF-T from 97 Squadron
On 27th April 1942, the crew of Lancaster L7577 OF-T from 97 Squadron took off at 2023 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.
With a near full moon, visibility was perfect. However, owing to the smoke screen created by the smoke pots and smoke vessels around Tirpitz and the other shipping in the area the crew were unable to identify either the primary (Tirpitz) or the secondary (shipping in Lofjord) targets. Instead they released their bomb load on the runways at Værnes aerodrome to the south of the targets and observed bursts. Light flak and light firing was encountered at higher level but very little heavy flak or searchlights. The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing in the early hours of the morning on 28th April 1942. |
