R5515 KM-A from 44 Squadron

On 27th April 1942, the crew of Lancaster R5515 KM-A from 44 Squadron took off at 2015 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

The weather on reaching the Norwegian coast allowed the pilot and crew to navigate to the target using landmarks. They pinpointed the island of Smöla and then a second pinpoint was obtained between the fjords Orkdals and Gaulosen just west of Trondheim where a dummy ship was observed in Orkdalsfjord. Their course was then altered North to avoid Trondheim, and the aircraft flew down Strindfjord and pinpointed Varnes airfield where intense, heavy and accurate flak was encountered. From here the aircraft started a dive from 12,000 feet to 7,500 feet dropping one 4,000 lb bomb in the target area before taking a bearing North East to East in order to avoid heavy flak. Four 500 lb bombs were then dropped on a flak battery situated on a peninsula in Åsenfjord. Several large explosions were observed near a ship in the fjord. Considerable flak was reported as being experienced throughout.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing at 0350 hrs on 28th April1942.

On 28th April 1942, the crew of Lancaster R5515 KM-A from 44 Squadron took off at 2055 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

Tirpitz was located and attacked at 0035 hrs from 8,500 feet with 1 x 4,000 lb RDX bomb. The bomb was estimated to have fallen 200 yards away from Tirpitz. 4 x 500 lb GP bombs were aimed at a flak ship near Fættenfjord which scored direct hits and the ship dissappeared. All bursts were seen. The Pilot noted searchlights were seen between Trondheim and Strandemfjord and only slight flak was encountered at the target area. There was no flak activity from Trondheim, no balloons seen or enemy aircraft were sighted and no dummies or dinghies seen. On arrival at the target a smoke screen was being commenced. IFF (Identify Friend of Foe) was used with effect on blue searchlights between Trondheim and Strandemfjord. No camouflage was noticed.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing at 0410 hrs on 29th April1942.
