W1058 ZA-L from 10 Squadron

On 28th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W1058 ZA-L from 10 Squadron took off at 2036 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

The flight to Trondheim was made in excellent visibility. However, on arrival at the target area a smoke screen was in operation over Tirpitz and an attack was made on direct reckoning from 500 feet at 0050 hrs. Intense and accurate flak was encountered from guns on both sides of the fjord and the aircraft was extensively holed in the fuselage. The tail gunner, Sgt Gifford, received slight shrapnel wounds in his legs which required hospital treatment on returning to base.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Lossiemouth landing at 0505 hrs on 29th April1942.
