W1049 TL-V from 35 Squadron



On 27th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W1049 TL-V from 35 Squadron took off at 2028 hrs from RAF Kinloss on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

On arriving in the target area they found that Tirpitz was obscured by a smoke screen. The aircraft dropped its load of mines through the smoke where they believed the target to be lying.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Kinloss landing at 0501 hrs on 28th April 1942.

On 28th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W1049 TL-V from 35 Squadron took off at 2046 hrs from RAF Kinloss on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.

Early into the flight, the aircraft developed engine trouble. About eight miles north of Shetland the crew turned the aircraft round and flew back to base. The load of mines was jettisoned "safe" in the sea.

The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Kinloss landing at 0021 hrs on 29th April 1942.
