W1021 TL-J from 35 Squadron
On 30th March 1942, the crew of Halifax W1021 TL-J from 35 Squadron took off at approximately 1900 hrs from RAF Kinloss on the North East Coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.
The aircraft and crew experienced difficulties with the starboard outer engine which was badly overheating. Attempts by the crew to rectify the problem were unsuccesful and the engine was shut down. Although it would have been possible to reach the target area with only three engines, full power was required in the target area for the bombing run over the target which would not have been possible on three engines. Consequently the aircraft and crew returned to base and landed safely. |
