W1010 ZA-X from 10 Squadron
On 30th March 1942, the crew of Halifax W1010 ZA-X from 10 Squadron took off at 1845 hrs from RAF Lossiemouth on the North East Coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.
The crew arrived at the target area to find it obliterated by 10/10ths low cloud which obscured the fjords and valleys below. They were unable to locate the target and jettisoned their 4 x 1,000lb mines at 2320 hrs at a position of 63.02 N 06.10 E. The aircraft and crew returned safely to base landing at RAF Lossiemouth at 0245 hrs on 31st March. |
