W1006 MP-K from 76 Squadron
On 27th April 1942, the crew of Halifax W1006 MP-K from 76 Squadron took off at 2012 hrs from RAF Tain on the North East coast of Scotland to participate in an attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz which was moored at the time in Fættenfjord in Norway.
On reaching the target area the crew were unable to see Tirpitz due to the smoke and haze. However, they estimated the position of the ship using other features in the fjord which could be clearly seen. The bomb was seen to burst shorewards from the estimated position of the ship. The aircraft and crew returned safely to RAF Tain landing at 0418 hrs on 28th April 1942. |
